Stick a fork in it: HD DVD headed for history

Don Day February 17th, 2008

hd.jpgIt looks like this generation’s VHS versus Betamax battle may be over. Toshiba - which is responsible for the format - put out a statement saying it “may” pull the plug, but that no final decision has been made. Regardless of the decision - external forces have thrown it to the scrap heap: Wal-Mart said it will only carry Blu-Ray Friday - and Netflix made the same decision Monday. Target and Blockbuster also dumped the HD DVD format.

The more expensive discs that play on the more expensive players won out because they bought off more studios and more retailers with their more money. And even the poor suckers who bet on Blu-Ray players will have to junk the ones they already bought for new ones if they want to take advantage of the new Profile 1.1 and Profile 2.0 discs that are already in the pipeline. Or maybe they can hold out for Profile 3.0? Yay for being wedded to proprietary platforms. Good thing the whole platter technology is going out of favor anyway. I’ll just take the movies and video games off of BitTorrent, thank you.

well, illegal downloads are obviously questionable but I agree that discs are a hassle and seem old fashioned already. How much longer can physical formats really survive?

I still buy laserdiscs. Good luck.
