HD DVD format officially dead

Today Toshiba officially pulled the plug on the HD DVD format, ending the format wars with Blu-Ray. “This was a very difficult decision to make…but when we thought about the trouble we would cause to consumers and our partners, we decided it was not right for us to keep going with such a small presence,” Toshiba Chief Executive Atsutoshi Nishida told a news conference.

Great! Now I can worry less about how many digital video formats I’m ignoring completely.

The only thing I feel bad about is that HD-DVD is a much better, more descriptive name. High-Def DVD - that’s something consumers can kinda, sorta, maybe be intuitive about. Blu-Ray? Meaningless.

I guess it was good foresight by Microsoft to not include a HD DVD drive in their Xbox 360. Imagine if the war had gone the other way and thousands of PS3 buyers were stuck with paying for obsolete technology.
