‘Quarterlife’ debuts with miserable ratings

Cory Bergman February 27th, 2008

How bad were the ratings for the web original show Quarterlife when it premiered on NBC this week? It was “the network’s worst time-period performance in at least 17 years,” says Hollywood Reporter. Why? Let’s count the reasons, shall we? First, the show has already run on MySpace. Second, it premiered on MTV earlier on the same day. And third, the show is designed for a web audience of young people who are watching less and less TV.

The web is not TV…

Well it was worth a try. I actually like the show and hope it continues. I didn’t watch it on the web because 8 minute episodes over 30 weeks isn’t worth my time…

Was it ever actually advertised that it would show on TV? I never saw anything for it.

have we not learned yet that the audience rejects that which sucks…and so why are we surprised when it happen again?

Many, many moons ago, MAD TV had a sketch about every stereotypical teen/young adult drama out there entitled “Pretty White Kids With Problems.” The ads (and yes, there were wall-to-wall ads all over NBC for the premiere) pointed out that this was the first series to premiere on the network from the internet. I almost believed the hype until I realized what the show was about.

    Pretty White Twenty-somethings With Problems.

More of the same whiny, narcissistic pablum that’s all over the CW, MTV “reality shows,” and pretty much every teen drama ever created after Degrassi Junior High with the exception of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Of course, Buffy was horror. These shows are just horrible.

I’ll probably sample the show, but because I knew that it’d be online in its entirety, I didn’t bother with watching it on tv.
