Bush presser kept off NBC to benefit MSNBC

Don Day February 28th, 2008

If it wasn’t obvious before, NBC signaled that everything after 7:25am on the Today show is no-news zone. President Bush held a news conference in the 10 a.m. ET hour - which was carried on ABC, CBS and all the cable news nets. But not NBC - which is the only of the broadcast networks airing a “news” program at that time. “We’re trying to make MSNBC the place to go for NBC News, and the strategy is working,” NBC News VP in charge of Today and MSNBC told the AP. Even on the West Coast - where the speech aired during Today’s first hour, the speech and Q&A didn’t appear.

Yeah, their west coast affils just love that strategy. NBC news, celebrating 60 years of screwing over the west coast.

It’s probably worth pointing out that NBC is the only one of the three stations mentioned that has a cable news sister channel. I’m not going to wade into the debate over whether it’s right or wrong to push harder news to cable and keep lifestyle coverage on Today, just pointing out that NBC has a definite strategy regarding when and where news is covered.

Also, I work for msnbc.com, the website, not the cable channel.

And I REALLY am dying to find the perfect dispoable party dishes at 7:30. Let the station I watch put Regis and Kelly on at a reasoable time again or give me an excuse to avoid The Price Is Right.
