NFL to whine to Congress

Cory Bergman March 4th, 2008

Sigh. In Congress on Wednesday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell plans to accuse Comcast and Time Warner of discriminating against the NFL Network. Oh, and he’s going to rip the FCC, too. Plueeze.

The one thing that makes the NFL the 900 pound gorilla in TV ratings is the one thing that hurts its NFL network.

The NFL’s ratings are so high because there is a restriction of product…one game, appointment TV…every week. Every game for every team means something.

In baseball and hoops, you lose 2-3 in a row and it’s no big deal, no one game (save the postseason) means anything, so no big reason to tune in.

Conversely, the NFL network has little product to champion during the week. While the NBA has games galore every night and so does MLB , the NFL has a handful of Thursday games and then mostly talking heads, guys running 40 times and replays, hardly compelling TV. There is little demand for that 24-hour non-product and fans have decided that they can go without those 8, held for ransom games a year…even if it’s NY Giants at New England. I don’t the the NFL gave in on that game because of fan demand, but because of fan apathy.

Believe me, Sunday and Monday night is enough, football on Thursday stinks.

    Channels a la carte, anyone?

    Yes, please.
