seems like section 508 compliance does not require captioning for web video, but the standard was written in 2001.

Closed captioning web clips would benefit more than just the disabled. Many of us either don’t have speakers, or it is distracting/problematic for us to play video clips with sound, particularly at work.

World Now video platform stations have the functionality to capture station’s on-air captions if it’s the input is downstream of the caption system. It’s only takes a checkbox to include them.

The problem is closed captioned is so bad at most stations with spelling issues most folks including my station don’t include them. We do use the caption feed to transcribe reporter packages that can’t write a script from the field!

Google is working on using speech recognition to automatically generate searchable captions for video. Here’s a Google VP:

“You may have heard about our [directory assistance] 1-800-GOOG-411 service. […] The reason we really did it is because we need to build a great speech-to-text model … that we can use for all kinds of different things, including video search.”
