Hedge fund targets Media General’s board

Harbinger Capital Partners, the same hedge fund that forced its way on to the board of the New York Times, is now gunning for struggling Media General. The shareholders will have to decide between trusting current leadership or electing three new directors nominated by the fund.

MySpace and record labels partner in music site

If you can’t beat ‘em, start a MySpace page. Three of the four major record companies are going in with MySpace to start a music site in an effort to stem the faltering tide of record sales. The MySpace Music service will be spun off as an independent joint venture in partnership with Universal Music, Sony BMG and Warner Music Group. EMI, the fourth major label, is expected to join up down the road.

Google cuts 300 jobs at DoubleClick

Just weeks after the March 11 takeover, Google has cut 300 jobs at DoubleClick’s U.S. operation. The cuts represent about a quarter of DoubleClick’s American work force of about 1,200. DoubleClick has another 300 or so employees overseas, who may be next on the block. Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt says the reduction in force is just business as usual in acquisitions and mergers.

Google: Video ads just as good as TV

Google tested the impact of :30 second commercials on TV, on YouTube and embedded in online content. And the results were the same across the board, although the embedded ads performed slightly better in purchase intent. “It disabuses people of the notion that online is only good for direct response or transactional stuff,” said Google’s Kevin Kells. The :30 second spots were originally designed for TV — Google said if they were tailored to an online environment, the online ads likely would have performed better. Meanwhile, Google has yet to turn a profit on YouTube. “Advertising on YouTube has not generated very much in the way of revenue, and I don’t think they’ve quite cracked the code on how to do that,'’ said Josh Bernoff, an analyst at Forrester Research Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “YouTube has the potential to open up that brand awareness advertising bucket to Google.'’

Rex’s new project: YouTube zine

Friend of LR Rex Sorgatz revealed on this CNET podcast that he’s launching a zine about YouTube. “That’s right, to hell with digital media!” he writes. Rex said the low-tech zine will point out interesting YouTube nuggets and feature interviews with big-name YouTubers. Retro coolness.
