MySpace and record labels partner in music site
David Johnson April 3rd, 2008
If you can’t beat ‘em, start a MySpace page. Three of the four major record companies are going in with MySpace to start a music site in an effort to stem the faltering tide of record sales. The MySpace Music service will be spun off as an independent joint venture in partnership with Universal Music, Sony BMG and Warner Music Group. EMI, the fourth major label, is expected to join up down the road.

Some experts (not me) think this can give iTunes a run for their money, mainly because it ties into what is already an enormous music community on MySpace. Music is actually what got MySpace going in the first place.

I think this is a good idea. With the exception of artist like Kanye West and Justin Timberlake, music sales have been down for many artist in music. Janet Jackson recently released her album only about 4 weeks ago and she only sold in the 170k range 1st week, and she has slipped to below 25k sales weekly after only 4 weeks. In her prime her sales were much higher then that.
Targeting the myspace audience will help them reach a wider audience and that could potntially lead to more sales.

MySpace? Last place I’d go for anything and I think with all the junk people have heard pounded into their heads on the news some folks wonder if they’d be a pariah to bother.
