Grass Valley automates web video

In an announcement here at NAB-RTNDA, Thompson Grass Valley took the wraps off a new product called MediaFuse that automates the process of posting video clips of news stories online. The product is an extension of Ignite, its automated news production system, and it extracts individual stories from newscasts and encodes them for the web. Grass Valley also announced it has teamed up with WorldNow to automatically funnel these clips into WorldNow’s video content management system. We’ll head over to Grass Valley’s booth to get a demo, and post more details later…

CBS releases March Madness streaming stats

The tournament is over and the stats are tallied: 4.7 million unique users watched CBS and NCAA’s March Madness on Demand. That’s up from last year’s 1.8 million, reports PaidContent. As for total hours watched: 4,925,566. Wow, that’s a lot of lost productivity at work.

Reporter resume tapes and the web

Last year, we pointed out that very few resumes on the jobs bulletin here at the RTNDA side of the NAB convention showed any web experience. But this year, at least one-third of the resumes list online experience. Some resumes are even for web producer positions!

Splendid. Now the next step is tape critiques. There’s an over-dependence on resume tapes in TV news. It’s drummed into every young reporter’s head: make sure you edit a collage of your best anchoring and live shots at the top, because your appearance and delivery on camera matters the most. In the new world, it’s just a number of factors. In this spirit, I approached the RTNDA sign-up desk for one-on-one resume tape critiques and I asked, “Do you offer web critiques?” The answer, of course, was no, but the gentlemen promised, “Next year.” Which I responded, “I’m holding you to it.”

On the ground in Las Vegas

We’re here at NAB-RTNDA, getting our press passes and credentials. Our coverage begins tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. PT at the NAB opening session. Oddly, actor Tim Robbins will be delivering the keynote. Like every year, the president of NAB will also speak, which is always good entertainment for the Lost Remote faithful. Last year, President David Rehr first mentioned the internet 47 MINUTES into the session despite the fact much of the convention is dedicated to it. And it was never mentioned again for the remainder of his speech. So this year, we wonder, how many minutes before Rehr mentions this little technology called the internet?
