WNWO announces round of layoffs

Cory Bergman April 25th, 2008

The Toledo station, owned by Barrington Broadcasting, has laid off an undisclosed number of newsroom staff. “We’re facing a brave new world here, and models we’ve used for 40 or 50 years are no longer applicable,” said VP/GM Jon Skorburg.

I’m not saying that lay-offs may not be necessary, but they do not constitute a survival plan, just a delaying tactic unless coupled with a parallel plan to grow and evolve the business. Don’t see any hint of that in the article.

There’s nothing funny about this except the notion that they’re laying of reporters, writers, editors…but “keeping our frontline people”. Maybe they can just read the newspaper…oh yeah, that’s going away too.

Barrington is laying off employees at almost of their 15 stations. More than 50 group-wide, I hear.
