Don Day April 29th, 2008
Reuters reports that NBC and CBS will submit a second bid for The Weather Channel and its digital properties. Owner Landmark Communications is trying to unload the network, and a second round of bids is due in early May. Reuters said the channel will likely fetch less than $5 billion.

ok, say it sells for 1/2 that.
that would still be 2 1/2x the entire market cap of all the belo tv stations, and more than the enterprise value of hearst argyle in today’s market
pretty damn good for a single cable channel and its web property.
just a little context.

In terms of valuation, I’d argue that it is weather.com that is the crown jewel of this deal. TWC is no longer a cable channel with a website.
It’s a big, honkin highly-trafficked website that happens to come with a cable channel.

it’s fine by me… the two examples i gave for comparison also include their web properties.

Weather Report: I agree that day-to-day, day-in and day-out the website is the crown jewel, but whenever I’ve lived on the Outer Banks or in another hurricane-prone area, you can tell when the storm is getting close; It’s when everyone starts monitoring the Weather Channel on the the television. During those last few days, it’s like no other channel even exists (except at 6 & 11, when you turn to the local guys for a different perspective)

I go outside and watch the weather, maybe inside if it’s cold and wet.
How is weather reporting worth more than You Tube?
Someone over there got the shaft.
