Report: 3G iPhone for $199

Michael Gay April 29th, 2008

iphoneIf Fortune is right, there could be a game-changing move coming this summer that will bring the iPhone into the mainstream for many more consumers. While still tied to AT&T, Fortune says the 3G iPhone will come with a $200 discount from the wireless company that will bring the price down to $199 for the 8GB and $299 for the 16GB device. Being 3G, the higher speed data service could open up video streaming to your handset. Imagine your live newscast or VOD being viewed by consumers away from the television AND computer. Plus, if Fortune is right, the phone will also have GPS built in. That will make Google maps that much better.

Beta tests look like iPhone is opening up to sync with Microsoft Outlook servers for all of us Blackberry-bound business users who can’t let go of our e-mail for even a few minutes. With that in mind, could iPhone be the new Blackberry for business? I’d love one. Hint.

Never wanted a Blackberry. All it took was for my GM to have one to make it seem like the most uncool thing ever.

So what about all those iPhone first adopters? Can we trade in our 1G iPhones for this awesome new model?

I love my iPhone, but guessing a lot of business users would have a problem with this as a primary device– the touchscreen keyboard is not that great for those who type 30,000 words a day via their BBerry.

Or maybe I just have fat, fat fingers.

My current cellular contract is up in August, so I’m reaaaaally looking forward to getting an iPhone myself. A price discount makes it that much more appealing (although the other rumor about increasing data costs per month is not delightful whatsoever….)

Me too. But not enough to break my Sprint contract. I’ll wait.

Not until they break the AT&T-texting-stranglehold and get iChat on it!

In five years you’ll find stuff like this in the dollar stores.

$199 + $2400, that is. I’m holding out to see what Google’s phones will look like. I also think the US should adopt the system used in the rest of the world: No renting your phone from your carrier.
