THIS is the reason Apple couldn't (wouldn't) agree to NBC's DRM demands.

I got a 28 year old boombox today. Twisted Sister's playing.

(Hey it says "metal" right on the cassette door and records with AC, DC and both so it is 'metal compatible')

Why should they have the power to show programs?

ha!!

Also, geeze, they couldn't have tacked "Sorry" onto the end of their little sentence there?

IIt was probably a test by NBC checking to see if the technology works. It does, and the public is now on alert…

I figured (and wrote) as much. And as Don points out, having the "power to make this mistake" just means it will happen again and again. There is no good that can possibly come from this technology. If you have a technology that, even when implemented exactly correctly, will piss off the most ardent fans of a given show (those most prone to record it), it's a bad technology.

This will not work. First of all, it relies on way too many partners getting it right in too many stages of the process. Then it relies on MS software. From the CNET article:

"The success of the entire distribution chain is dependent on all involved maintaining the necessary checks and quality control so that coding is correctly applied," a Microsoft spokeswoman wrote in an e-mail to News.com.

Would you invest in that kind of plan?

Networks: Do not get involved with this program. It will only hurt you, make you look draconian, ironically drag down your ratings and it will misfire many times. Once you've lost me as a fan for a show, you've ruined any chances of having me watch "live," and giving the locals a lead-in.

Show me a technology designed to block the audience, and I'll show you a technology that costs a ton of money and will fail regardless. Work with your audience instead of treating them like thieves.

PS: “We made an inadvertent mistake.” Is there another kind?
