Changing names with the times

Cory Bergman May 23rd, 2008

The Broadcast Cable Financial Management Association (BCFM) has announced that it has changed its name to the Media Financial Management Association “to embrace the new media that are reshaping our businesses.” So, the finance folks have changed their association’s name, but the news association (Radio and Television News Directors Association) and the technology association (National Association of Broadcasters) are still tooting their old horns. Maybe change is a little more real on the financial side.

So, what would you rename RTNDA? NAB?

although the change is inevitable, you have to wonder why the wait.

wall street is voting with its dollars when is comes to “old” v. “new”.

the market gain or loss on a daily basis for a company like goog is equal to or exceeds the entire market cap of many of the old players.

and what will broadcasting and cable rename itself?

Before any news directors would agree to a name change, first, you’d have to explain to them what “new media” is (”Oh … is that why viewers aren’t tuning in at 6pm anymore?”).

Sometimes you don’t need to change the letters, if they become a well-known brand. ESPN comes to mind. Nobody thinks of it as “Entertainment and Sports Programming Network.” It’s just ESPN. CNN isn’t The Cable News Network anymore.

Mind you - both organizations need change - it comes from within, and the name wouldn’t be the first place I’d start.

    EMNDA=Electronic Media News Directors’ Association
(to differentiate them from dead-tree media, however much longer the printing presses keep rolling)

NAMMO=National Association of Mass Media Outlets
(though … will anything be “mass” media for much longer? maybe it would be better to align along content area rather than delivery medium … National Association of Entertainment Media … National Association of News Media … hmm)

safran raises a good point: simply changing a name won’t do much, but you have to start somewhere, right?

last year the rally cry was “local media company”, yet most still think and act like they are in the broadcast business.

having been around a few 12 step programs i can tell you SAYING the first step and actually DOING it are two different things. many walk through the doors, some succeed and some will die along the way because they simply can’t accept and change their old ways.

“some would rather die than change” is illustrated quite clearly in many of today’s share prices, don’t you agree?

    RIP.

retorts like the previous one have tdc yearning for the lostremote daily stock quotes of days past showing the CLEAR inverse action of “old” and “new” media plays.

relax pal, have a drink to calm your nerves.
