Networks move to stop RedLasso’s blog clips

Cory Bergman May 31st, 2008

RedLasso records thousands of hours of network, cable and even local TV broadcasts, and then it makes the video available for bloggers to edit out “limited duration clips” and embed them on their sites. It’s become very popular during the political season, and as you might imagine, has drawn the legal attention of some of the networks. CBS, NBC and Fox have demanded that RedLasso stop distributing its video, and RedLasso responded by saying it will “continue to make its site available for use by bloggers providing social commentary on newsworthy events as it continues to work towards cooperative, mutually beneficial arrangements with those and other content providers.”

I don’t think this requires a legal genius to figure out what’s going to happen next.

“I don’t think this requires a legal genius to figure out what’s going to happen next.”

    Puppies and lollipops for everyone?

Well, I am a legal genius - I have a degree in journalism - so I note at least one mistake by RL so far - insisting:

“Clip usage by bloggers is an exercise of first amendment rights to provide social commentary on newsworthy events.”

As far as I know, the 1st Amendment: “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press…,” does not extend to CBS and NBC deciding it doesn’t want RedLasso to offer a service featuring its copyrighted material.

The 1st Am takes a beating online. All it says is Congress can’t abridge free speech. The networks absolutely can.

“the networks absolutely can” only by a set of laws passed by congress.

me thinks redlasso is going for the jugular here.

    btw-

i guess this topic is as good as any to post this:

locals really missed an opportunity when the ceo of sling said at a recent conference- “if any of you have a subpoena, here i am” .

    instead, they all chuckled.

Is something like Clip Syndicate a legal version of Red Lasso? I honestly don’t know - I think they do the same thing, but legally.
