CBS.com to allow video embedding

As recent as a year ago, the TV industry was, well, reluctant to allow users to grab video clips and embed them as they please. Now it’s quickly becoming a standard feature. CBS.com is expected to announce on Monday that it’s adding embedding functionality to its show video clips. A few days ago, ABC.com said it was working on the same feature. And of course, it’s been a standard (and popular) feature on NBC/Fox’s Hulu.com.

CBS Interactive announced today it is launching a new video player with next-generation features to enhance the user viewing experience. The video player’s added features will be launching over the next few months and will offer content streaming in true HD-quality, full-screen viewing capacity, a redesigned interface and embeddable video clips. In line with CBS Interactive’s focus on content distribution the player will be deployed across CBS.com and the CBS Audience Network, the biggest video distribution network for premium online content.

The new player will continue to bring syndicated content to its users and deliver a stunning video viewing experience without requiring a separate software download. Users can watch CBS premium content in an elegant, user-friendly interface with support for H.264 – the same standard deployed in Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

“As the first premium content network to take an open approach to syndication, we are committed to providing our users with the best online viewing experience possible,” said Anthony Soohoo, SVP and GM of Entertainment at CBS Interactive. “Our new video player platform takes advantage of the new social medium online by combining the most advanced video technology with our expertise in premium content programming to deliver new ways to discover and enjoy entertainment online.”

The new video player presents users with innovative options to interact with content and other users. The slick redesign of the interface provides an intuitive way to experience video content online with new navigation and search features to make browsing and watching videos more user-friendly. Added social features include support for content sharing through embeddable video clips allowing users to embed their favorite videos and clips on blogs and social network profiles to share with their friends, creating a more interactive and social viewing experience.
