Apple has blown the roof off mobile? The camera still stinks. No video recording of any kind. No external storage slots. And still no cut and paste! The iPhone has a few more adjustments to really get me excited. However, I still want one.

There's a wide range of applications that become an order of magnitude better when they're location-aware:

- News
- Weather
- Traffic
- Transit directions
- Dining out
- Ordering in/Delivery
- Entertainment/movie listings
- Shopping guides
- Bathroom guides
- Taxi/towncar services
- Classified ads

In other words, ANYTHING "local" benefits the most from location-awareness.

If I'm on a 3G iPhone (or any other location-aware device) and have the choice between a GPS-enabled site and a "dumb" site, there's no question which one I'm going to use.

Bottom line: If your website is in the business of being local, you have to make your site location-aware right now, or your competitor is going to eat your lunch in the mobile space.

Oh my, finally an iPhone that supports Exchange.

Though I no longer work in that world - I used to have staff members come in with their new shiny iPhones and demand that I hook them up with the Exchange server. Somehow iPhones had a justifiable educational reason in their minds so they could spend public funds on them. Fun times...especially when I got "OMA (Outlook Mobile Access) is ugly - fix it so I don't have to use it!"

It has been my experience (and I do not have much) that the AP is good for localizing content for the big metro areas, like Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles. But anything less than the largest 15 cities or so, well, you are out of luck. Here in Grand Rapids, MI, I am about 300 miles outside of Detroit. It is just about as far away as Chicago is. But because I live in Michigan, my "local" content on many sites is always defaulted to Detroit, regardless of the fact that their news is of little interest to me as a GR consumer.

So hopefully the iPhone applications can bring in news to ACTUALLY target the selected areas. If this means I can get Grand Rapids news, instead of Detroit, then I will be very happy.

The AP usually hosts their WAP content - this just bypasses the local media source.

I wonder how the local AP affiliates that have WAP sites will feel about a localized mobile AP that supports UGC.

It would be nice if this new app linked back to the original mobile sites (similiar to the CNN affiliate links), but somehow I doubt that.
