Firefox 3 smashes download records

Cory Bergman June 19th, 2008

The Mozilla Project logged 8,290,545 downloads of the brand new Firefox 3 in just 24 hours. That’s sets a new record for the most software downloads in a single day. So Firefox 3 users, do you like the new version?

I’ve been very pleased with it. Very fast and stable so far.

Works fine on my XP work computer, but generates errors and crashes on my Win2K home machine. I still prefer Opera. Your mileage may vary.

Opera 9.5 - which was released shortly before FF3 - is a hands down superior browser. Every feature Firefox has, Opera has had for quite some time.

Firefox just has a huge “fanboy” following- most of which probably downloaded the browser 20+ times.

I’d also be curious if that number represents completed downloads versus initial file requests.

Seems like a some nice improvement but I’m still waiting for some essential add-ons to update/upgrade so I can get it working the way I totally customized FF2. Right now it’s like having one hand tied behind my back, not working the way I was used to -.but that’s the add-on creators’ fault, not Mozilla’s.

    So far, so good.

    Lovin’ it!

As Mark put it — it’s stable and fast. What’s more, I had access to all of my third-party development tools and toys on day one.

Firebug, YSlow, Greasemonkey, Web Developer, ScreenGrab!, and Twitterfox

I was worried there would be a development delay.

@Mike - what are you waiting on?

So far FF3 renders pages faster. That’s a huge plus in my book.

Pages load a bit faster, which is nice. The drop-down menu from the address bar now has links with descriptions, and that kind of look like a spam site, so, that’ll take some getting used to. You can select multiple pages to go back to for the forward button, but not the back, which doesn’t exactly make me too happy. Other than that, it works smoothly and does what it is supposed to.

Switched from Opera 9.5 to FF3. Like them both (I’ve used Opera since version 2) but for me Firefox is edging out Opera because of the add-ons available.

I’m monogamous and only sleep with one browser.
