Users turn to Topeka site for tornado news

Cory Bergman June 23rd, 2008

Topeka’s WIBW.com attracted 1.1 million page views on 136,000 unique users when the tornados hit earlier this month — not bad considering the market has only 117,000 households. The GM at WIBW is so sold on the web, he covered up the word “TV” in the big “WIBW” sign in front of the station. (TVNewsday free registration required.)

Jim Ogle, the GM at that station, has always been a big proponent of web efforts going back many years.

Stations that win weather on the web, especially during a big event, go a long way to solidifying their future relevance and will flourish.

We had staggering usage in Indianapolis during record flooding that hit part of Indiana — numbers I wouldn’t have believed were possible.

True, tdc, and yes, Don Lundy has been very supportive of our efforts, too. Thanks for tossing me that softball to swing at.

don was one of the first gm’s to blog … and actually engaged the commenters there (starting like 4-5 years ago!).
