LA Times announces more cuts

Cory Bergman July 3rd, 2008

The LA Times will reduce its newsroom staff by 150 people, including some from the web team. “Thanks to the Internet, we have more readers for our great journalism than at any time in our history,” wrote editor Russ Stanton in a staff memo. “But also thanks to the Internet, our advertisers have more choices, and we have less money.” The LA Times also plans to reorganize, “combining the print and Web staffs into a single operation with a unified budget.”

    The internet: a double-edged sword.

In this case, the benefits and damages obviously didn’t even out.

The LA Times has over 50 people in its DC bureau.

Meanwhile, Tribune has just 7 people providing DC bureau coverage for all its TV stations.

I think the LA Times could adequately cover DC with several dozen fewer staffers.

And that’s why you won’t find a lot of sympathy for the Trib papers at the Trib TV stations… Trib Broadcasting is getting slashed and costs-frozen and it seems like all the fat is over on the paper side.
