Google CEO: Ads on YouTube ‘holy grail’
Cory Bergman July 17th, 2008
Google announced less-than-anticipated earnings, which resulted in a big after-hours dip in the company’s stock price. During the earnings call, CEO Eric Schmidt said YouTube is working on new ways to generate revenue. “That is the holy grail,” he said. “When we find it, it’s likely to be very large because of the scope and scale of YouTube.” So far, Schmidt said they’re happy with the lower-third overlay ad, but they’re working on new revenue approaches and products. “I personally do not believe the perfect (YouTube) ad has been invented,” he said. We’re (still) staying tuned…

Obviously making money from YouTube is going to take a lot of thought and they’re going to need to be prepared for some missteps.
I don’t know if the contest is still running, but Playboy was doing a Playmate search via YouTube and because they’re a “partner”, the submissions to this contest was getting an overlay and one of those 15 second deals.
Not too long after it started (and started getting the ad treatment), one of the primary “sponsors” was the State of Utah.
I’m pretty sure that the Travel Utah ads were being randomly selected from what’s available and after I made a comment about this on Valleywag, the sponsor’s ad suddenly switched to a regular Adwords box. But, I’m pretty sure that based on what I know about government, Utah and its culture, they probably wouldn’t have appreciated being so closely tied to a Playmate search.
Just saying… And, I can imagine a lot of other scenarios, where a randomly-selected, legitimate advertiser might not want to be seen as sponsoring certain types of content.

It’s always the SAME THING on the overlays too! I’m TWICE as sure I’m not touching the product if they keep messing with my clip.
On another note, Sony and somebody started making episodes of Tiny Gorgeous Chicken Machine Show INTERACTIVE…I didn’t know you could click on Flash and go to the next episode or something?
