Google walks away from possible Digg deal

Cory Bergman July 27th, 2008

TechCrunch is reporting that Google has decided not to acquire Digg (in the $200 million range) just when the discussions were moving into their final stages. How many is this now for Digg?

We may not be Digging but we will be voting on search results as part of a Social Google in the very near future.

One big reason. What is Microsoft really after at Yahoo? Flickr and Delicious! Delicious kicks Diggs ass and is much more of a community rather than a sewer of spam.

I do not want to see a bury button on Google. I can handle voting, but that bury button on Digg is 10 times more powerful than 100 Diggs.

We missed front page on a slow day because of a few buries last week on Digg.

If you follow SEO at all you probably know that Goggle has been giving alot of weight to 50 to 100 Diggs on a blog post under niche terms.

I can go to the top of any lightly searched term with 100 Diggs. Propeller and Sphinn will show up right next to your blog post with just a few votes. So….

With that kind of power being given to sources outside Google I expect Google to roll out a Google social system with profiles, voting and fully under their control and give us a clean, no spam, social search engine. In fact I have been predicting this for months on my blog and longer in private.

But then again I am one of those that has been predicting the Digg buyout / integration into Google results.

When you count up all of Diggs problems and especially the bury brigades and spam / self promotion levels, Digg is not a good choice.

I use Propeller and while I have my gripes about the new interface there is little spam and blatant self promotion, you don’t get flamed by idiots and I do not miss Digg in least. In fact, I was hoping Google would buy Digg and clean up the mess because I did really enjoy using Digg in the past.

I’ve never even been there, so it’s a non-issue to me.

Bravo Google! That Kevin Rose is an annoying pain in the rear. I just don’t get the dig on Digg. It’s mostly worthless drivel.
