Are they really “citizen journalists” or people with cameras who are in the right place at the right time? Why is the word “journalist” even brought up?

Because it is trendy to do so.
Home videos on the internet do not equal “journalism.”

“There are 8 million Handycams in the City Of Angels…every single one of them owned by a budding Spielberg, a new Murrow and the next Serling rolled into a happy little Prozac pill. People come to me with their dreams and watch me light my cigar illegally with them in a public smoke-free nightmare. You call me outrageous and I call for Chinese.meals as your wannabe hopes die faster than your camcorder battery. I’m no sadomasochist, lady, I’m the news director at a station so far into a swamp that I get all of Pogo’s email…fancy that! No offemse intended. Just go home and pick up the dishes and don’t forget to watch Eyewitness News, will ya?

Don — did you actually LOOK at these videos? There’s the Judge Judy taping, multiple dubs of various local newscasts … plus a comic strip-tease (the earthquake shakes the clothes off), plus an apocalyptically-toned ITN report from the “big one” years ago. Digging past all of that, there are a handful of interesting user-generated videos of the actual quake.

Not any of them featuring Bill Haley and gis Comets, I’ll bet.
