Location awareness (or geolocation) is getting a lot of buzz these days, led by GPS functionality in the new iPhones. And now Yahoo has launched Fire Eagle out of beta — a service that let’s you specify your location and share this data with whichever sites you choose. Yahoo says Fire Eagle is “a switchboard for location” and said the objective was to make everything on the web “more useful, fun or interesting by adding the element of location”.

I think there’s tremendous potential in location awareness. In fact, I believe it will ultimately revolutionize local search and mobile advertising. While some of the iPhone apps are certainly interesting (Yelp and UrbanSpoon, for example, find restaurants closest to me), nobody has really nailed the killer app. Yet. But stay tuned…
