iPhone’s incredible success story continues
Cory Bergman August 14th, 2008
An analyst is predicting that Apple will sell 4.47 million iPhones this quarter alone — that compares to just 1.12 million first-generation iPhones that sold over the same period last time around. On top of that, Best Buy will soon sell iPhones in their retail stores. And there are still some lines at iPhone stores around the country (when was the last time you saw such extended demand for a new product outside of the holiday season?) All this is good news for Apple: its market value has just surpassed Google.

As I wrote a few weeks ago, the iPhone 3G is the device that will trigger the mobile revolution, especially on the local front. We already know that iPhone users access exponentially more content on their devices than other smart phones (see study), and mobile use at most news sites is skyrocketing and will only continue to accelerate. Stay tuned, as I’ll be reviewing some of the local iPhone apps in coming days.
Update: As mentioned in the comments, 3G reception problems are pouring in from frustrated iPhone users across the country.

Cory - best hold off on that review if it means you have to purchase one yourself. Wait until they resolve their chipset issues, which is the cause of the 3G’s sluggish performance.

Agreed on both fronts - it’s revolutionary and locals need to be on this AND the reception problem needs to be resolved.

Surpassed Google’s market share? Don’t you mean market cap? They are very different things.

Re: long lines - long lines alone are not necessarily indicative of high demand. Apple is forcing people into a single retail outlet for (nearly) all iPhone activations. As Mike Davidson points out at mikeindustries, it is great marketing. Long lines outside Apple stores give the perception of high demand and pique curiosity. I am not an original iPhone owner, but I do own the 3G model. Aside from the absolutely horrible (potentially deal-breaking) battery life on the 3G phone (daily charge required), the product is amazing.

Phone itself is pretty cool if you could use 3G reliably.

I held off until the 4th Gen. ipod (i think). I’m still holding off on the iPhone until some of the other issues are worked out. While it sounds enticing and works great in the store, the real-world issues will keep me sidelined until at least the next hype-season in June/July.
I also like the idea of the Chevy Volt, but there’s no way in heck I’d be part of the guinea pig generation for that either.
Early adoption has too many headaches for my taste.

If you find anything really good to add Apple will likely send a kill signal…

Ginny D. in Racine begs, “My man is dying for apps! Bring him back and I will tune up his Honda and watch poker at 3am as long as I am on his Outlook!”
