4 more papers dropping AP

Cory Bergman August 20th, 2008

The Bakersfield Californian, The Spokesman-Review, The Yakima Herald-Republic and Wenatchee World are all following in the footsteps of The Post Register to drop Associated Press after the AP announced new rates. And the Review is trying to drop AP without the two-year required advance notice.

Adds Rob in comments: “With Yakima and Wenatchee — two of the other major Eastern Washington papers (along with Spokane’s Spokesman-Review) — joining suit in dumping AP, I wonder if this means Washington papers might attempt something similar to OHNO (Ohio News Organization)?”

Update: As linked in the comments, here’s Spokesman-Review Editor Steven Smith’s blog post explaining the decision to drop AP.

In the E & P article S-R editor Steve Smith says that all the pieces will be in place by the end of this week to discontinue their AP agreement.

With Yakima and Wenatchee - two of the other major Eastern Washington papers - joining suit in dumping AP, I wonder if this means Washington papers might attempt something similar to OHNO?

That’s ok. AP has apparently had no problem jacking up the rates of AP Digital customers to make up the difference.

Steve Smith of the SR has posted more on his paper’s reasonings behind leaving the AP on his personal blog. (click my name)

From Steve Smith’s blog which Amanda linked to:

“The wire service does send us stories from other regional papers and we need and use those. But, frankly, why should we pay for that. Most of the regional editors with whom I’m discussing the situation, would be happy to develop our own, free web-based content sharing system. That idea already is taking shape in other parts of the country. And we can obtain most of what we need in business and sports from far cheaper services.”

    So yeah … WANO,

@Rob, more like WAIDNO rather than just WANO - pronounced “whadda I know?”.

Can’t forget our friends just over the state line…

I am especially interested in this development since the The Yakima Herald-Republic is our sister paper and this decision may eventually affect us in Walla Walla.

Ehhh…is Citadel still in the toilet too? What fun Disney is going to have, not only selling the TV O&O’s but repossessing the radio network andselling it off again?

Something tells me they are asking for Alice Cooper to perform this behead–er–divorce.

    Bring a fresh python, Alice.

Cool. No more crappy writing from the AP. Like, “pleaded innocent,” and “rap songs.”
