After working hard for over a year to gain traction with its TV advertising product, Google has landed its first big client: NBCU, which will offer selected inventory for Google-purchased TV spots on Sci Fi, Oxygen, MSNBC, CNBC and other cable channels. Explains Clickz:
Importantly, the companies said they will jointly adapt the Google TV Ads platform to support locally-targeted campaigns. A limitation of the platform to date has been the absence of geo-targeting.
So once the local functionality is enabled, local advertisers who use Google Adwords can click the “buy TV advertising” link and buy local spots in NBCU cable channels. This may motivate local TV stations to give Google a second look. (Full disclosure: NBCU owns half of msnbc.com, my employer).
