Politico.com helps boost WJLA coverage

Cory Bergman October 6th, 2008

Allbritton owns both Politico.com and WJLA, and both news operations share the same facility. “We’re separate entities in the newsroom, but we derive enormous benefits from having them there,” says Bill Lord, WJLA’s VP of news. “We use each other constantly.” Politico is growing like wildfire — up to 3.6 million monthly unique users — and it has plans to add more staff and launch a new site in the coming months, reports Broadcasting & Cable. While WJLA is benefiting from Politico’s coverage, the jury is still out on whether it’s translating to a sustainable ratings boost.

I can see where a local DC station might benefit from having a political website under their roof, but I’m not a big fan of Politico’s relationship with Yahoo!. Too many times lately, I’ve clicked on a Yahoo! homepage headline only to find myself reading some dude’s opinion and the conversational tone which might work on his blogsite doesn’t translate well to a more newsy site because you get about a quarter of the way down, then you start to ask “who’s this guy?”, then you have to glance up to see to see the source.

I’ve long felt that whomever put old “Onion” headlines in the WaPo sidebars should be fired, but at least their nonsense is clearly marked and the reader is only mislead for a split second. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for Politico/Yahoo and I find it somewhat irritating to say the least.
