Layoffs at Zillow despite big growth

Posted by Cory Bergman on October 17, 2008

Startups are heeding the advice of their investors and cutting costs fast in the face of a major recession. For one, Zillow announced today that it’s laying off 25 percent of its staff despite a 42 percent increase in traffic over the previous year. Zillow CEO Rich Barton explains it well:

“We concluded that we had no choice but to securely batten down the hatches as we sail into a major economic storm. The unprecedented economic events that are playing out on a global stage began in our own industry and have made a prolonged recession likely, in our judgment. We are a young company that is not yet making a profit. Despite having sizeable cash reserves, we deemed the responsible course was to meaningfully reduce expenses, so that Zillow emerges from the other side of the recession in a very strong position, even if the recession lasts many years.”

This is just the beginning of layoffs in the industry, I’m afraid…

It looks like there will be thousands more layoffs at Yahoo, too.

The weird thing about Zillow’s increased traffic, though, is that we’re in a housing slump. Are people logging on to find out how much money they’ve lost in their home?

Until increased traffic translates into dollars, informational web sites will struggle. The initial web bubble burst when people began being suspect of companies that were losing tons of money and had few prospects of turning that around. Increase page views just don’t cut it.There is a demand for information on the web, just few economic models to support it.

traffic doesnt equal revenue…ask facebook. I see thousands of jobs posted on employment sites…those laid off will find work

good luck to those searching for jobs.

Nobody is immune from the “when will clicks equal dollars” issue. It looks like Internet Broadcasting is cutting people too.

Zillow has really fallen off the stool! Not only do they not list homes I’ve been in close to reasonably but the homes they do list are so out of touch with what home values are you really have to take there cartoon like assessments with more than a grain of salt , a bottle of vodka would be more like it! COME on get your head….well you know where I am going with this. HELLO! See ya. Stick with your realtor NOT Zillow…
