i could wind up with pizza on my face on this one, but from past experience owners of businesses tend not to trust their employees enough to simply let a customer “show them something” to get a discount.

seriously.

i recall conversations with plenty of restaurant owners who wouldn't/couldn't bring themselves to “honor” anything short of a paper coupon that got stuck into the cash drawer as they suspected their servers would rip them off and pocket the $. at first, i was speechless (doesn't happen very often), but then i began delivering a retort something along the lines of “if you can't trust your waitstaff to give a customer a 10-20% discount on their tab without jeopardizing their job, then you have problems far deeper”.

as i said, i could be totally off on this call because that experience was lived 8-10 years ago.

did i ever mention we were way ahead of our time?
