I’m going to predict that 2010 will be the year of the Great Non-Profit News Experiment. I think you’re going to be reading a lot of these types of stories. Tom Ferrick, Jr., a former columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer has launched Metropolis (at the somewhat unwieldy URL of phlmetropolis.com). Philebrity points to an important mission statement from the Metropolis site:

Metropolis is a website dedicated to the notion that the time has come to stop worrying about the future of local journalism and to start creating it.

We’re going to be hearing a lot more positive goals like that this year. Will non-profs be part of the future of local news? They won’t fully replace for-profit news, but they certainly show every sign that they will be more than a quickly forgotten experiment. (Via @jeffjarvis)
