How Sky News used the web to reach Haiti

With the phones down in Haiti, SkyNews turned to Twitter, Facebook, Skype, YouTube and Google Chat in the early hours following the quake to cover the story from thousands of miles away. “The necessity of using the internet because the phones were down forced all traditional news gathering to the side, and meant we relied entirely on the web,” explained Emily Purser in an inside account on her blog, adding that Sky News was the “first international news platform to have pictures from on the ground and a live interview from Haiti.” As you might imagine, the lessons learned from Haiti will have a profound impact on “social newsgathering” with deep local applications, as well.

  1. I”m trying to understand the technology behind this. In order to use any social media platform from their cell phone, the phone must have access to a wireless network in Haiti. So, then some of the wireless networks are still operating. The same with a computer. Would this be correct?
