Pulitzer focused on the content not the medium of delivery. He might well have honored news regardless where it came from, as you suggest.

@joshc: In the last paragraph I wrote that I didn't think the Edwards story was Pulitzer-worthy. But I was trying to raise a larger topic. At some point, we WILL see a high-quality, nomination-worthy story from a non-newspaper source. Of course the Pulitzers can set whatever rules they wish. You make a good point about the Oscars; I'd counter with the fact that they have added categories over the years that celebrate all aspects of filmmaking and not just acting and directing. The Pulitzers should honor all aspects of high-quality news.

As a private organization, the Pulitzer can and will set its own rules; so it is entirely possible that there will never be a time with TV journalism is “Pulitzer-worthy” for the very simple reason that the prize exists to recognize daily newspaper journalism. This doesn't say anything about the quality of work being done in magazines, tabloids, or on television any more than it does when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences refuses to recognize a beautiful stage production for Oscar consideration.

Beyond that, though, do you *really* think that the Edwards mistress story would be shortlisted for a Pulitzer regardless of which organization published it.
