Monster acquires Yahoo’s HotJobs for $225 million

Monster.com announced it has acquired Yahoo’s HotJobs for $225 million in cash, according to the press release. The deal also includes a three year commercial traffic agreement in which Monster will become Yahoo!’s provider of career and job content on the Yahoo! homepage.

HotJobs currently has 600 daily and weekly newspaper partners, and the deal with Monster will grow the partners to approximately 1,000. “The additional newspaper alliances, through their online and print classified ads, will further Monster’s current strategy of connecting job seekers with smaller, local businesses, particularly in healthcare, education, and skilled and hourly job categories,” explains the press release.

It’s part of a larger strategy by Yahoo to unload its non-core properties, according to Techcrunch, but it will likely further hinder local newspapers’ efforts to maintain whatever classified employment business they still have. According to the Techcrunch post, “both Hotjobs and Monster have been lagging newer job search sites such as Indeed, which searches the entire Web for job listings.” So the competition is really only just heating up.

I don't use Monster, because the buttons don't work with Opera. I wonder if HotJobs will become like this.
