Gordon Lightfoot: not dead, at dentist

Gordon Lightfoot: Alive

The reports of singer Gordon LIghtfoot’s death are greatly exaggerated. News outlets picked up a rumor today that Lightfoot had died. He had not. The rumor may have started on Twitter (it certainly spread there). Several Canadian papers ran with the apparent Tweet, and sites like PhillyBurbs.com picked it up. At least Cleveland Scene Weekly, which also ran the story, has a gallows sense of humor about it: it kept up the story with a strikethrough running through the entire piece. But there’s a serious message here: Twitter is like a scanner. There is a lot of information and a lot of static. It’s not a primary source, but it’s a good place for leads. Nothing beats checking on a story.

Where was Gordon during his “death?” At the dentist. Now, everyone who reported or retweeted that Gord was dead, do a penance: get a paid download of “Sundown.”

  1. Or a paid download of “Beautiful,” my favorite song of his.

Investigation finds that for $3.99 at the iTunes Store, you can get the Rhino Hi-Five: Sundown, If You Could Read My Mind, Beautiful, Carefree Highway, and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Everyone should own those songs.

  3. This is a serious issue and the newspapers should be punished for publishing such a bad rumor.

  6. Never trust anything you read on twitter. I went to the dentists in Atlanta once and had my whole mouth fixed up which took a few hours, during which time my phone was turned off. When I got out my wife was calling and telling me she thought something had happened, this was made worse by the fact that I couldn't talk straight away after the anaesthetic that I had. She thought I had been in car crash or something crazy like that.
