Google tests enhanced local listings

When you search for a local business in Google, what’s called a “seven pack” of listings appears, next to a map, in the search results. Google is testing a new feature that allows businesses to enhance their listings by including a link to photos, videos, coupons, directions, a menu or reservations signup. In the example below, North Valley Optometry has added photos to their listing with a little yellow icon:

“These enhancements are an easy and straightforward way for businesses to emphasize information that may already be available on their Place Pages or websites, and to connect with interested, locally-based potential customers,” explains Shalini Agarwal, Google Product Manager. “The enhancements do not affect the ranking of Local Business Center listings, and we clearly indicate which parts of the search result are sponsored.”

The feature costs $25/month, and it’s currently in testing in San Jose and Houston. Google says they’re evaluating the test results, and may expand across the country soon.
