We are a multi-platform nation. That’s the finding from Pew Internet & American Life’s latest survey, “Understanding the Participatory News Consumer.” The study finds that 92% of people in the U.S. get their information from multiple platforms on a given day. Maybe even more amazing – 46% get their info from four to six platforms per day. Four to six. Only 7% get their news from a single platform. Other key findings (quoted from paper):
The internet is now the third most popular news platform, behind local television news and national television news.
75% of online news consumers say they get news forwarded through email or posts on social networking sites and 52% say they share links to news with others via those means.
26% of all Americans say they get some form of news via cell phone today–that amounts to 33% of cell phone owners.
28% of internet users have customized their home page to include news from their favorite source or topics.
Only 48% want news from “objective” sources. 38% want news from sources that agree with their political POV.
There is a lot in this dense, fascinating study. It’s today’s must read.
