ABC restored to NYC Cablevision subscribers

A deal has been reached, and ABC is back on in New York City for Cablevision subscribers. As a result, New Yorkers only missed the first 13 minutes of the Oscars (I can inform them they didn’t miss much). Earlier on Sunday, ABC pulled its New York affiliate, WABC-TV from Cablevision in a fight over retransmission fees. Cablevision had been refusing to pay ABC for carriage, saying it was already paying ABC parent company $200 million for other Disney channels, such as ESPN. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed. But differing accounts have Cablevision paying anywhere from 27 to 65 cents per customer per month. (Disney had asked for $1.) Writes today’s LA Times:

“Rebecca Campbell, general manager of Disney’s WABC-TV in New York, said in a statement that the agreement “recognizes the fair value” for carriage of the station on Cablevision’s systems, although “deal points” had yet to be finalized.

“Cablevision executive Charles Schueler said the deal was “fair to our customers” and “in line with our other programming agreements.”

So who’s the winner? You’d have to give this one to Disney, whose gambit left viewers in the cold but earned the company some big added revenue.

  • Guess that big groundswell didn't rise up for ABC the way they had planned so they had to eat crow and put their programming back on.

It's funny how with this deal and the Scripps / Cablevision deal, we knew the numbers while they were negotiating (they were both tossing them around to slime the other) and yet once those deals are signed, we never hear about their numbers again.

Another thought: maybe it's time Cable companies charge for each local channel and people can buy the ones they want. That would stop this madness. If I had a choice, I'd buy CBS and Fox and that would pretty much be it. Then ABC and NBC could see how much of a "fair market value" their networks really have.

vincent. I left a comment on one of your websites about 4 years ago and was wondering if you could remove it for me so that my name will not show up on a websearch. let me know. thanks.
  • No. I can't. In fact, I'm gonna highlight the comments in their own post just so they show up even more.

    Have a great day!

Isn't it shocking and unfortunate how lazy, selfish and vindictive most of America is today? People will go out of their way to try to make others worse off but not to do good for another person.

    Good health to you, sir.

Don't be a worm...use your iDoohicky and network properly.
  • Let me get this straight. You threaten and harrass me and then expect me to do something good for you?

Amazing how you went from tough "get a lawyer" guy to "pweeeze pwetty pweeeze help widdle old me?"

Incidentally, Google is a big fan of yours now.

    Good health to you, too.

Indeed. Looking back on it makes me laugh. It could have just been an episode of deja vu. But man it sounded EXACTLY like the conversation I had with the guy.

I actually wanted to just have the unnecessary pages not show up in the search but thanks for the one dedicated to me. I kinda appreciate it.
