CNN’s Klein says he fears social networks

At a press event in NY today, CNN chief Jonathan Klein says he fears social networks more than his TV competition. “The competition I’m really afraid of are social networking sites,” he said. “That threatens to pull people away from us. The people you’re friends with on Facebook or the people you follow on Twitter are trusted sources of information. Well, we want to be the most trusted name in news.”

A reasonable fear in a new world of social distribution?

Klein is thinking like the boss of a cable news network not the boss of cnn.com. Surely, in the future, social networks will be CNN's distribution system, leveraging the trust of friends to make sure that links to videostreams are clicked on and viewed rather than trashed as spam.

Social networking is still of little use and poses major security problems, leading me to ignore using it mostly.

What is the point? I have a life already and where is that new/used life dealership I'm told to visit? I hereby vilify these cranky, crass amateurs and am proud none of my DNA was involved in their making. Pbbbbbbblllt, says Bill the Cat.

Reporters, anchors and other media employees....take this as a hint to be a little more personable online instead of acting as if you can't be bothered to lowering yourselves to communicate with your audience, no matter where they are.

Networking with your community is good for generating story ideas and getting people to trust you as an authoritative source of accurate news.
