Wall Street Journal to add local NYC sports news

Posted by Steve Safran on March 24, 2010

Never say never. Rupert Murdoch’s makeover of The Wall Street Journal is taking perhaps its biggest turn to date – it’s adding a sports section. Writes the New York Observer:

“The Journal’s New York sports section will assign beat reporters to the major local sports teams, including the Mets, Yankees, Jets, Giants and the Knicks, sources said. They’ll be credentialed for home games, and they’ll travel to road games.”

Murdoch has said he intends to take on the New York Times, and this is another sign of movement in that direction. Purists will certainly scoff at this move, but is it a pragmatic shift in the effort to get more readers? And at what point does The Wall Street Journal stop being THE WALL STREET JOURNAL and start being a new entity entirely?
