RTDNA@NAB 2010: To friend or not to friend?

Posted by Steve Safran on April 12, 2010

What does it mean to “friend” a person, especially a politician or viewer? That’s part of the discussion in the social media workshop here at RTDNA@NAB 2010. There is some interesting discussion going on, and I invite you to pipe in. If you “friend” the governor, for example, does that indicate you support him/her? Should you have separate friend accounts for professional and personal lives? Chip Mahaney, director of digital media at E.W. Scripps says he has “never been able to lead a double life,” but knows anchors and reporters that have separate Facebook pages. One member of audience says reporter friend was asked to make fake Facebook account to friend the mother of a crime victim. I don’t know much, but I’m pretty sure we can call that “unbelievably wicked unethical.”
