Twitter has taken the wraps off its first foray into advertising. Called “promoted tweets” and sold on a CPM basis, they’ll appear at the top of relevant Twitter search results. Over time, they’ll also appear in your own Twitter stream based on “resonance” — a combination of retweets, favorites, impressions and clicks.
Although there’s no mention of it, you can imagine how Twitter may combine geolocation into the equation, as well, resulting in a new competitor on the local advertising front.

Here’s an example of a promoted tweet. “This announcement is a long time coming and we’re thrilled to finally be able to share it with you,” says Twitter’s Biz Stone. “As this project matures, there will be more to talk about.” Twitter is announcing a few more details tomorrow at its CHIRP developers conference.
