#4sqday has emerged as a global phenomenon. Some are calling it the world’s ”first social media holiday.” Foursquare Day, April 16 for obvious math reasons, has developed into a massive movement, devoted to bringing together ”swarms” and meetups of Foursquare users in cities across the world. Some cities are even challenging one another to see who can get a bigger turnout for Foursquare Day.
#4sqday is a community-organized holiday that champions people, ideas, and anything and everything having to do with Foursquare. To celebrate the event, there, of course, is a Foursquare Day Facebook Page. The Fan Page includes links to the “official” #4sqday website, event info, and photos of foursquare meetups from around the globe. The hashtag #4sqday that I have embedded throughout this post has risen to become a top trend on Twitter.
Many businesses have joined the #4sqday movement, offering special discounts to honor the holiday. Venues hosting “swarms,” where large numbers of Foursquare users can get together and celebrate, are tapping into the cultural zeitgeist created by the social game. The loads of business #4sqday is drving to these local bars and restaurants is a nice outgrowth of the crowd-sourced event.
To make the day even more special, there’s a chance that Foursquare could cross the one million member mark today.
