NECN adds 4:30 am newscast, is wicked early

Is 4:30 am the new 5:30 am? NECN, the regional all-news channel in Boston, (and my former employer) has added a 1/2 hour newscast at 4:30 am. It’s a first here in Boston, although there are 4:30 am newscasts in D.C. and Atlanta, and 4 am newscasts in the midwest. Is there even an audience to be had at that hour?

“We’re drawing ratings at those hours so there is an audience,” (Station GM Bill) Bridgen said. “It’s not the size of the Super Bowl audience, but it’s a substantial audience. For us, it’s that opportunity to get the viewer first.”

I’m the former Morning EP at NECN, and even I think that’s early.
