The Bay Citizen is up and running in San Francisco today. Formerly known by the working title “Bay Area News Project,” the site is a not-for-profit with $5 million in funding from a host of foundations and sponsors. On its site, the Project writes:
“In this historic time of flux in the news industry, we have an unprecedented opportunity to pioneer new ways of creating, distributing and sustaining quality local news. We created The Bay Citizen for people like you who want a reliable source of ambitious, balanced journalism for the Bay Area.”
The site has an editorial team of 15 people (including two interns). There are certainly plenty of questions about whether not-for-profit news can survive beyond its initial stages, and The Bay Citizen will be one of the most ambitious test labs in this arena.
