10 ideas for hyperlocals

Posted by Steve Safran on June 9, 2010

David Higgerson blogs a great list of “10 ideas for hyperlocal websites,” and I would add that many of these are also great ideas for local and national sites. I won’t plagiarize them all here, but here are some of the better ones:

  • Weather: There’s a reason why newspapers spend a fair bit of money on weather for their newspapers – people want it, and the more local the better.
  • Don’t get carried away with pet issues: In other words, stick to stuff which you know will appeal to your audience.
  • Readers don’t care about rivals: … you won’t see a regional newspaper attacking a rival publication, or even criticizing them. The reason for this is that the reader doesn’t really care.
  • This is a good list that also includes tips about use of pictures, columnists and even nostalgia.
