Hyperlocal coupon site LivingSocial expands

Posted by Steve Safran on September 3, 2010

LivingSocial, a group-buying coupon site, is expanding its services to three regions of the DC area and four regions of the New York City area. This brings their concept of hyperlocal advertising to a new phase – one that isn’t merely limited to cities but drills down into neighborhoods.

The idea is similar to Groupon – the site announces a new deal every day, and users have 24 hours to take advantage of it. In the press release, LivingSocial CEO Tim O’Shaughnessy makes an excellent point about advertising in New York City: “…we know that if you live in Tribeca, sometimes the Upper West Side might as well be in another state.” LivingSocial is now live in 64 markets and three countries. This, of course, is more bad news for TV stations and their sites, which still largely do not have any such offerings and continue to miss out on important ad dollars. Full press release here.
