The Journal Register announced today it’s planning to launch a hyperlocal portal, yet to be named, in the Philadelphia market. The company owns 20 community newspapers and magazines in the greater Philadelphia area, and the new portal will pull together its coverage along with content from its partners. The portal will also surface links to neighborhood blogs through a partnership with Outside.in.
“This site will be powered by the audience and will benefit — through traffic and revenue — those who publish their content here,” said Jonathan Cooper, Vice President of Content. “We realize the benefit of plural voices in the community. There are hundreds of sources for news about Philadelphia and we will link to those who do it the best.”
The press release is careful to point out that the new site “will focus on supporting the existing blog community rather than attempting to direct or create it.”
