Las Vegas Sun rolls out hyperlocal features

The Las Vegas Sun has launched an extensive hyperlocal section that features drag-and-drop widgets for just about everything, well, under the sun.

Among the widgets are the things you might expect: neighborhood news, events, restaurant reviews and high school sports. But it also includes a searchable crime map, a real estate map (that includes foreclosures), neighborhood forum posts, school lunches, nearby Tweets and YouTube clips, and daily deals from neighborhood businesses. And each widget is exportable with a click to iGoogle.

“With the launch of the Home News section of our newspaper website, we will try to create a sense of community that is essential for the future of Southern Nevada,” explains Rob Curley, the site’s senior digital editor. He said in a tweet that his team has “been waiting more than two years to launch” the features.
