As Skype said itself in a blog post in October, its video calling service has become “pervasive” among TV news organizations, from the networks to cable channels and local affiliates. Skype even set up a registration page for broadcasters who want to use the service for live shots.
But yesterday, Skype crashed for most of the day — it’s mostly back now — which has something to do with “supernodes,” Skype says.
Like Tumblr’s crash a couple weeks ago, it’s a good reminder that while quickly-growing services like Skype are a terrific resource, they occasionally crash. Think of it, perhaps, as the modern equivalent of satellite rain fade.
As Skype’s Villu Arak points out, “We would like to point out that very few technologies or communications networks today are guaranteed to operate without interruptions.”
